You open your phone and there it is again. Mercury retrograde is coming. Back up your files. Don’t sign anything. Don’t text him back. Brace yourself.
And something in you tightens. Not because you believe a planet is coming for your inbox, but because you were already doubting yourself. Already rereading the email you sent this morning. Already asking a friend, then another friend, whether you made the right call.
If you’re in the middle of a life change, you know this feeling well. The woman who used to decide things easily now hesitates. You know more than you ever have, and somehow you trust yourself less.
Here is what I want you to hear before the warnings get any louder: Mercury retrograde is not happening to you. It is happening for you. And the thing it is most eager to help you with is the very thing you’ve been quietly losing. Your trust in your own voice.
This is a guide to how to trust yourself when everything feels uncertain. Not by forcing confidence, and not by waiting until you feel sure, but by learning to listen to yourself again, a little more each day.
What Mercury Retrograde Is Really About
Mercury is the planet of the mind: how you think, speak, listen, and make sense of your life. It’s the inner narrator. A few times a year, Mercury appears to move backward in the sky. It isn’t actually reversing. It only looks that way from where we stand. But symbolically, that apparent backward turn draws the attention inward.
In evolutionary astrology, retrograde seasons belong to the “re-” words. Review. Reconsider. Revisit. Reconnect. Return. They are not a stop sign on your life. They are an invitation to go back over what you think you know and ask whether it’s still true.
This retrograde begins on October 24, 2026, and runs until November 13, all of it in Scorpio. Scorpio doesn’t do the polite version. It asks the candid question underneath the comfortable answer. So this cycle has a particular kind of honesty to it. It wants to know where you’ve been telling yourself one story while your body has been telling you another.
Notice what the fear-based version of retrograde does to a woman who is already second-guessing herself. It tells her the safest move is to hand her judgment over to the sky, to the forecast, to anyone but herself. That isn’t protection. It’s one more way of being taught to look outward first.
Why Self-Doubt Gets Loud in Seasons of Change
Self-doubt after a big life change is not a character flaw. It is almost a rite of passage.
For years, you trusted yourself through a particular set of reference points: your role, your routines, the people who reflected you back to yourself. Then you outgrew some of them. Maybe the marriage ended, or the kids left, or the career that once fit started to feel like someone else’s coat. The old ways of knowing who you are stopped working, and the new ones haven’t fully arrived.
So you hesitate. You poll your friends. You research a decision until you can’t feel it anymore.
That hesitation doesn’t mean your judgment is broken. It means you are between languages. You are learning to hear yourself without the old scaffolding, and that always feels shaky at first.
Doubt or discernment?
It helps to tell the two apart. Doubt is a loop. It asks the same question again and again, never satisfied, usually louder at night. Discernment is a pause. It asks once, listens, and moves. Doubt says, “What if I get this wrong?” Discernment says, “Wait. Something here doesn’t feel right. Let me look closer.”
One drains you. The other is your wisdom doing its job. A retrograde season, used well, is a chance to quiet the first so you can finally hear the second.
How to Trust Your Intuition: Your Body Knew First
In the tarot, The High Priestess sits quietly between two pillars, a veil behind her, a scroll half hidden in her lap. She doesn’t explain herself. She doesn’t argue. Her knowing is still and patient, and it’s available only to the woman willing to slow down enough to hear it.
Most of the women I work with don’t lack intuition. They have learned, very skillfully, to overrule it.
You feel your stomach drop when you agree to chair the committee, and you say yes anyway. You notice the long exhale when a plan gets cancelled, and you reschedule it the next day. You sense the conversation is off, and you tell yourself you’re being too sensitive.
Your body knew first. It almost always does. Intuition tends to speak in sensation before it speaks in words: a tightening, a softening, a heaviness, a lift. Fear speaks too, but differently. Fear is urgent and full of stories about the future. Intuition is calm, specific, and about right now.
So before you learn anything new, it’s worth asking something old and honest. Where have I been overriding what my body already knows? And what would I hear if I let myself listen again?
Write down whatever comes first. You don’t have to act on it yet. Just let it be true on the page.
A Daily Check-In Practice for Self-Trust
Self-trust is not a feeling you wait for. It is built the same way trust with anyone is built: through small promises, kept over time. A retrograde gives you about three weeks. That’s long enough to collect real evidence that you can listen to yourself and follow through.
Here is a simple check-in you can do every day of this cycle. It takes about two minutes.
1. Stop at the same time each day. Morning coffee, the car before you walk inside, the last few minutes before sleep. Consistency matters more than length.
2. Place a hand on your chest or belly and take three slow breaths. Let your attention drop from your head into your body.
3. Ask, “What is true in my body right now?” Name what you notice without fixing it. Tired. Tight shoulders. Quietly hopeful. Restless.
4. Bring one real decision into the moment, even a small one. Ask whether it feels like expansion or contraction.
5. Write one line in a notebook. Then do one small thing that honors what you heard. Decline the extra task. Go to bed earlier. Say the honest sentence.
That last step is where the trust actually forms. Listening is lovely, but following through is what tells your nervous system, “She heard me, and she acted.” Do that enough times and your inner voice stops whispering. It starts speaking up, because it knows it will be heard.
Carry one sentence with you as you practice: I don’t need certainty to trust myself. I check in, I listen, and I follow what is true. Say it before you make a decision you’ve been tempted to outsource. Then make it yourself.
Let the Full Moon Show You What You’ve Learned
Within days of Mercury turning retrograde, the Full Moon rises in Taurus, the most grounded and body-wise sign of the zodiac. It’s a lovely counterweight to all that Scorpio depth. Where Scorpio digs, Taurus steadies. Where the mind spins, Taurus asks, “What does your body actually need?”
Treat that Full Moon as a gentle integration point for the whole month. Pour a cup of something warm and read back over your check-in notes. Look for the patterns rather than the single moments.
What did your body say no to more than once? Where did it soften? Which decision felt clearest when you stopped asking other people about it?
This isn’t a verdict on whether you’re doing life right. It’s a mirror. And very often, what you see there is a woman who knew more than she was giving herself credit for.
Coming Back to Your Own Voice
When Mercury stations direct in mid-November, the warnings will fade and the forecasts will move on to the next thing. But if you’ve practiced, something in you will have shifted. You’ll catch yourself pausing before you ask for a second opinion. You’ll notice your body’s yes and no a little sooner. You’ll make a call and let it stand.
That is how to trust yourself again. Not all at once, and not by becoming certain. By returning to yourself, over and over, until returning feels like home.
The woman you’re becoming is not waiting for permission from the sky. She’s learning to consult herself first.
If you’d like to know where this retrograde is landing in your own life, an astrology reading can show you which part of your chart Mercury is moving through and what it’s asking you to revisit there. It’s one of my favorite ways to turn a confusing season into a clear one.
